Build Your Business

A good idea is a good idea no matter what people sometimes may tell you. Sometimes it takes a leap of faith. Take the founders of Bear Naked. Everyone around them told them there wasn’t a market for their product. Every bank slammed a door in their face when they asked for a small business loan. But that didn’t stop them. Find out how they overcame obstacles to bring a successful product to market.

Bear Naked’s founders used guerrilla marketing and a wholesome image to build a powerhouse natural-food brand.

Fuel Economy

It’s officially summer and people usually hit the road to vacation at the beach or the mountains. Maybe some even buy a new car for that family trip. How important are gas prices this summer? In fact, 42% of people surveyed say fuel economy is “extremely important” in their decision to purchase new 2011 models. That’s a 13.5% increase compared with 10 years ago. Don’t have the cash flow funding for a new car? Don’t worry, wait until December. That’s when all the dealers post sales to clear inventory. Think of it as a present to yourself!

Buyers cite fuel economy as top factor for first time.

Debit Fees for Small Business

Do you process credit cards? As a merchant accepting credit cards from your customers is crucial for your bottom line. Retailers have been complaining for years that big banks have been gouging them with high fees to process debit card transactions. The Federal Reserve issued a final set of rules on the law setting the cap at 21 cents per transaction. That is better than the 44 cents but, it is also nearly double the 12 cents that small businesses were expecting.

Small business whiplashed in debit fee fight.

Weddings Mean Big Business

Apparently Gay Weddings mean big business – especially New York State. They are looking to capitalize in the next few years with a big ad campaign to lure same sex weddings to the state. Gayweddings.com is one of several small businesses featured here that are expected to benefit from the burgeoning gay and lesbian wedding industry.

RIP, Community Banks

During the first quarter of this year, demand for new loans continued dropping for banks of all sizes. For community banks, loan balances dropped nearly 2% or $17.3 billion over the previous quarter. Ouch. But while things have improved, although modestly, the fact that many small business owners still can’t justify taking out loans could further squeeze profits at community banks. Need an alternative to a bank loan, call United Capital Source today to discuss your funding options.

Local banks: Too small to survive?

Franchise Under Water

What do you do when your Franchisor goes under? It wasn’t for a lack of trying or management, Blockbuster simply got squeezed out of the market by new technology and quick, convenient upstarts like Redbox and Netflix. One Blockbuster owner who owned several dozen stores lost it all, but was fortunate to start all over….buying into another franchise.

How one owner survived being Blockbusted.

Toll Brothers

Toll Brothers, one of the leading home builders says mortgage rates will begin to rise in the next few weeks. But even with mortgage loans down 30% to 50%, housing remains a buyer’s market. Getting a reasonable loan from a bank though may be difficult though if you are searching for a loan other than based on prime.

Hybrid cars

Automakers have had a rough couple of years. With multiple closings in Detroit and now auto supply parts affected by the devastation in Japan, we could use some good news. One bright spot in the industry is the growth of hybrid cars both compact and luxury. Hybrid cars and pure electrics will grow to 7.2% of the market in 2015.

Hybrid-car sales will grow — but not how you would expect.

MAC upgrade

Steve Jobs gave small-business owners several reasons to consider either upgrading or converting to new Apple software. The new version of Mac OS X, known as Lion, aims to remove the burden of saving, storing and retrieving all types of data – including text files, photographs, videos and presentations. Need to upgrade your computer equipment, United Capital Source has the funding for you, call us at 855-WE-FUND-U.

Take the “I” Out

There is no “I” in team and apparently there shouldn’t be an “I” in Facebook or Twitter. If your small business has a FB or Twitter account make sure that you let your customers know that you as in “We” will be exhibiting, selling, giving away free gift cards. Yes, it is important to personalize your posts and make that human connection but there is no room to be selfish or constantly say “I this” and “I that”.
